Wittenberg Takes Wilson Invitational Title With Win Over Ramapo

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - In the first two weekends of intercollegiate athletics in 2007, Wittenberg has had an impressive record at invitationals. With their 1-0 win over Wilson on Saturday and a 2-1 victory over Ramapo on Sunday, the Tiger field hockey team added the title to the list which includes the volleyball team's title at tournaments at home and at Washington University, the men's soccer team's win in their own invitational, and the men's cross country team's finish at their Wittenberg Invitational.

Freshman Marisa Myers (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) opened the scoring against Ramapo College of New Jersey on an early penalty shot, tallying her first goal of the season. Ramapo returned the favor in the second period, scoring their only goal of the game against the otherwise impressive goalkeeping of sophomore goalie Sarah Umberger (Concord, NJ/Derryfield School).

At the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1, sending the game to overtime. Wittenberg struck with a goal from freshman midfielder Hannah Scheckelhoff (Blacklick, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) that was set up by senior midfielder Alison Voigt (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual). The goal ended the game, leaving Wittenberg on top of the contest and the weekend as the Tigers took first place in the invitational and Scheckelhoff earned MVP honors.

Wittenberg returns to Springfield for its first home contest and conference game Wednesday against Ohio Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
