Wittenberg On Three Game Streak, Vernon Continues Rampage

GAMBIER, Ohio - It would be unfair to say that the Wittenberg field hockey team has become a one-woman show. That is certainly not the case. But for someone unfaimiliar with the team, the statistics could give that impression.

Freshman Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) scored her eighth and ninth goals on the young season in Wednesday's matchup at Kenyon, giving Wittenberg the win by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. Her nine goals and 19 points are good enough to lead the team in both categories, freshman Hannah Scheckelhoff (Blacklick, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) her next closest teammate in points with six. Vernon's 19 points matches the cumulative figure for Tiger opponents on the season.

While Vernon's game-winning goal was unassisted, Schecklehoff contributed an assist on the goal that opened scoring for both teams.

Vernon was not the only player who had a big night, as sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School) picked up 12 saves, allowing one goal early in the second period.

Wednesday's win moves the Tigers to 5-2 overall, and 2-1 in conference play, while Kenyon dropped to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the NCAC. It was the first meeting between the two teams since Kenyon hung a 5-1 decision on the Tigers in the NCAC Tournament semifinals a year ago. The Ladies went on to win the NCAC Tournament title and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
