Tigers Shut Out Kenyon For Fifth Straight Win

GAMBIER, Ohio - Statistically, Wittenberg University 2-0 field hockey win over Kenyon College was nothing short of textbook.

The Tigers got an early goal from senior Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson) and a late goal from junior Caroline Mason (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), both of which were assisted by senior Rachel Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). That capped an offensive effort that included 11 shots for the Tigers, two more than their hosts. Similarly, Wittenberg had two more penalty corners in the game than Kenyon, which recorded a 1-0 win over the Tigers on their home field on Sept. 9.

Defensively, the Tigers got a shutout performance from freshman goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School), with a little help from her friends. Sophomore Beth Vonderbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame)came up bigger than most, recording her team-leading third defensive save of the season.

The win was a big one for the Tigers, who have rallied from a 2-3 start to win five straight North Coast Athletic Conference games and move into sole possession of second place in the standings. Wittenberg has a week to prepare for the biggest game of the year (so far) - a road game against unbeaten Wooster on Saturday, Oct. 7.
