Tigers Drop NCAC Opener To Kenyon

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers opened the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of the 2006 field hockey schedule with a 1-0 home loss to Kenyon.

The Tigers dropped to 1-2 overall on the young season, while Kenyon improved to 2-0 overall and the same in the NCAC. The Ladies opened the season last weekend with a 3-0 win over Denison.

Kenyon scored the game's only goal in the 10th minute of a very evenly played first half. The two teams recorded two shots apiece, and Wittenberg actually held the upper hand on penalty corners, 3-1. However, the Ladies dominated the second half with seven penalty corners to none for Wittenberg and nine shots to just one for the host team. Tiger freshman goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School) was solid, however, making four saves and keeping her team in the game through a scoreless final 35 minutes.

Wittenberg's three shots in the game were taken by sophomore Whitney Marshall (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional), senior Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson) and junior Alison Voigt (Louisville, Ky/Ballard). The Tigers are back in action on Sunday with a home game against DePauw at 5 p.m.
