Wittenberg Stumbles Against Rhodes

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers were hoping to carry over some of the momentum from their overtime victory over DePauw last weekend, but the Tigers got behind early and were unable to rally, falling to Rhodes, 3-1.

Wittenberg dropped to 2-3 overall, while Rhodes improved to 3-2. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday with a key home game against conference rival Ohio Wesleyan at 5 p.m.

Rhodes' scoring started with Callie Borgman finding the back of the cage nine minutes into the game off a penalty corner. Rhodes struck again with only eight minutes remaining in the first half with an unassisted goal by Hilary Mast. For the half, the two teams recorded six shots apiece, and Wittenberg actually held the upper hand on penalty corners, 5-2.

Wittenberg rallied in the second half as senior Rachel Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) found classmate Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson), who scored with just under 18 minutes remaining in the game. However, barely a minute later, the Lynx would record their last goal on another penalty corner, ending any Tiger threat. Elizabeth Erny was credited with the goal and Callie Borgman knotched the assist.

For the game each team had 12 shots. The difference in the game could be found in the penalty corners. Wittenberg failed to get a goal any of their eight attempts while Rhodes found the cage on two of their three opportunities.
