Tigers Fall On Road To Bellarmine In Non-Conference Finale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Wittenberg Tigers hit the road during Fall Break weekend to play their 2006 nonconference finale, but the trip ended on a disappointing note with a 4-1 loss to NCAA Division II Bellarmine in a game played at the University of Louisville.

The Knights, who are now giving athletics scholarships in field hockey, improved to 9-6 overall and remained perfect at their home away from home this year with a mark of 5-0. The Tigers dropped to 9-5 overall.

Bellarmine broke a scoreless tie in the 18th minute and pushed another score across before halftime to lead 2-0 at the intermission. After Bellarmine extended the lead to 3-0, Tigers' sophomore Whitney Marshall (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) scored from seven yards out in the 53rd minute.

The Knights, who outshot Wittenberg 18-5, threatened to score several times in the final 10 minutes, but sophomore Beth Vonderbrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) made two defensive saves and junior Sadie Mummert (Hanover, Pa./Littlestown) had another to keep the Tigers within striking distance. Bellarmine finally capped the scoring in the 65th minute.
