Wittenberg Rallies For Improbable Win Over DePauw

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In boxing terms, the Wittenberg Tigers were barely able to keep the fight going Sunday. The standing eight-count was administered about the time that the visiting DePauw Tigers took their fifth and final penalty corner of the second half.

But the Wittenberg Tigers got up off the mat, battled the ball downfield to get a penalty corner opportunity of their own, and this resourceful squad made the most of it. Senior Rachel Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drilled home a long shot off an assist from senior Holly McHugh (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) with just 2:58 remaining on the clock. That pushed the game into overtime, and after the visitors had two more penalty corner plays snuffed out, Wittenberg went on the attack and scored on its only shot of the less than three minutes of extra time for a most improbable 2-1 win.

Dunn had the assist on the game-winner, which was put home by senior Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson). That score evened Wittenberg's overall record at 2-2, a day after a 1-0 loss to North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon in the home opener.

Wittenberg was outshot 15-7 for the game and the DePauw Tigers held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners. But freshman goalkeeper Sarah Umberger (Concord, NH/Derryfield School) made six saves, including a beauty from point-blank range late in regulation that kept her team in position to win.
