Press Release: Wittenberg Field Hockey Standouts Earn All-Region Honors

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Following a solid 2006 season in which the Wittenberg field hockey team finished with an 11-7 overall record and placed second in the North Coast Athletic Conference, three players have been recognized with All-Great Lakes Region honors.

Senior midfielder/defender Rachel Dunn, class of 2007 from Pittsburgh, Pa., was selected to the first team, while forwards Caroline Mason, class of 2008 from New Canaan, Conn., and Katy Barrett, class of 2007 from Powell, Ohio, claimed second-team awards. This was the first all-region award of any kind for Dunn and Mason, while Barrett made her second straight appearance on the second team.

Dunn was a four-year starter for the Tigers. She was all over the field in 2006, contributing to a defense that recorded four shutouts on the season while also finishing with career-highs of three goals, including back-to-back game-winners against Oberlin and Denison on Sept. 23 and 26 respectively, 10 assists and 16 total points. Her 10 assists led the team.

Mason enjoyed a breakout season in 2006, her first as a full-time starter, as she finished with nine goals, second-most on the team, and three assists for 21 total points, which was tied for the tops on the squad. Barrett also had 21 total points while leading the Tigers with 10 goals. Barrett and Mason each had a team-leading four game-winning scores in 2006.

The Wittenberg field hockey program has not had a losing season since 1980 and is one of just two NCAC squads to reach the conference tournament in each of the five years it has been played. Head Coach Diana Kuser has a two-year record of 21-15 leading the program, including a mark of 17-7 in NCAC play.
