Wittenberg Guts Out 3-2 Win Over Sewanee

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Wittenberg Tigers had allowed four one-goal decisions to go the other way already in 2005, but on Sunday perhaps the tide turned a bit as Wittenberg captured a 3-2 decision over Sewanee in a game played at Centre College.

The Tigers improved to 3-5 on the season with the win. It could be a big momentum booster as Wittenberg heads into a busy week that includes a Wednesday home game against conference rival Ohio Wesleyan and an important home confrontation on Saturday with current NCAC front-runner Oberlin.

Once again, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Irvin was solid, turning away 11 shots as Sewanee peppered the Wittenberg goal with 33 shots in the game overall. Despite allowing two goals, Irvin's performance made the biggest scoring output of the season by the Tiger offense stand up.

Goals were scored by junior defender Rachel Dunn and junior forward Katy Barrett in the first half as Wittenberg took a 2-0 lead into halftime. After Sewanee rallied to tie the game with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Wittenberg got the game-winner from sophomore Alison Voigt, off a feed from freshman Mackenzie Huber. Freshman Whitney Marshall and junior Holly McHugh had the other two assists in the game for Wittenberg.
