Wittenberg Falls At Wooster For Fourth Straight Year

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster has been a house of horrors for the Wittenberg Tiger field hockey team in recent years, and Saturday was no different. Just weeks after handling their arch-rival 2-0 on their home turf, the Tigers were defeated 3-1 at Wooster in a key North Coast Athletic Conference regular season game.

The loss, the Tigers' fourth straight on Wooster's home field in the last four years, dropped Wittenberg to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC. Wooster improved to 6-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The good news for Wittenberg is that the regular season loss at Wooster has been followed up by NCAC championships each of the last three years.

The Tigers got on the board first, parlaying a pass from junior defender Rachel Dunn into a goal by sophomore midfielder Alison Voigt with a little less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. However, Wooster got the equalizer six minutes later, and then two goals were scored in the second half within a three-and-one-half minute span.

The statistics indicate a very lop-sided game in favor of the Scots. The total shot count is a whopping 33-6 in favor of Wooster, and the penalty corners were a stunning 18-3 in favor of the home team. Wittenberg was scrambling defensively throughout, picking up a season-high 17 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Irvin and two defensive saves by freshman defender Beth Vonderbrink.
