Wittenberg Squeaks Past Kenyon For Key Road Win

GAMBIER, Ohio - The turnaround continued on Wednesday as the Wittenberg Tigers won for the fourth straight time and the fifth time in six games with a key 2-1 road win over Kenyon. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Ladies, last year's North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament runner-up to the Tigers.

Wittenberg is now 6-5 overall and the Tigers have moved into a first-place tie with Oberlin at 5-2 in the conference as the teams make the turn in the annual road round formatted regular season. Kenyon dropped to 6-4 overall, but more importantly 4-4 in the NCAC.

The Tigers were outplayed statistically, but another strong defensive performance by sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Irvin and her backfield mates made a pair of first-half goals stand up. After Kenyon opened the scoring just one minute into the game, the Tigers responded with an unassisted score by senior forward Julia Wickham with 28:08 showing on the first half clock. Then Wittenberg picked up the game-winner, as it turned out, on an unassisted goal by junior forward Katy Barrett 10 minutes later.

Irvin was pushed into eight saves in the game, compared to just two for Kenyon's netminder. Wittenberg, which lost a 3-2 game to the Ladies last month, was outshot 14-8 overall and yielded 13 penalty corner opportunities, compared to just five for Wittenberg. Perhaps the biggest play of the game was a defensive save by junior defender Rachel Dunn.
