Wittenberg Upends Rhodes on Neutral Field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the third straight game, the Wittenberg Tigers followed the same script to victory. Freshman Nicole Irvin was solid again in goal, the offense was opportunistic as freshman Caroline Mason scored her second collegiate goal, and the Tigers controlled the majority of the action in the midfield. The result was a 1-0 win over Rhodes College, Wittenberg's third straight shutout to start the 2004 season under new coach Kiki Chesterton.

Mason's goal came at the 12:27 mark of the first half and staked the Tigers to yet another lead they wouldn't relinquish. Wittenberg wound up outshooting Rhodes 13-5, in part thanks to an 11-4 advantage on penalty corners. The Tigers have outshot their three opponents by wide margins so far in 2004, and they have outscored Ohio Wesleyan, DePauw and Rhodes by a collective 6-0 count.

Irvin was forced into three saves as she garnered win No. 3 in her brief collegiate career. Rhodes' goalkeeper accounted for four saves overall in the game.

Next up for Wittenberg is another date in Louisville on Sunday, this time opposite Sewanee. Game time is 1 p.m.
