The Wittenberg field hockey team got a big lift on Wednesday as they claimed their first road victory of the 2003 season at Ohio Wesleyan, 3-0. The Tigers had previously lost six straight away from the friendly confines of Edwards-Maurer Field, where they are 26-3 the last three years and have a perfect 3-0 mark in 2003.

In that win, freshman Katy Barrett (Powell, Ohio/Watterson) continued to assert herself on the offensive end, scoring twice. Freshman Melissa Jackson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added the third goal for the Tigers. Junior goalkeeper Jen Meyer (Solon, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) recorded her first shutout of the 2003 season.

On Saturday, against DePauw, the Tigers lost a heartbreaker, 2-1 in overtime. Barrett had the goal in that game for the Tigers and freshman Michelle Hanners (Columbus, Ohio/School for Girls) filled in admirably in goal, making eight saves.

The Tigers are back in NCAC action with the most crucial set of home games of the 2003 season during the next week. Visiting Springfield in the next eight days are the top three teams in the conference at present, Oberlin, Wooster and Denison. Wittenberg lost on the road to all three during the first round robin.
