SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Freshman forward Katy Barrett is one of seven first-year students on the 2003 Wittenberg University field hockey roster. While all have made significant contributions, Barrett has made perhaps the biggest impression of all as she has become an offensive force for the defending North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions. After scoring goals in two critical NCAC games last week against Wooster and Kenyon, Barrett was recognized as NCAA Division III Rookie of the Week by the Web site, womensfieldhockey.com, on Oct. 20.

The Tigers started the season by losing four of their first five games. Thanks to a much-improved offense and the stellar goaltending of junior Jen Meyer, Wittenberg has rallied, however, to post a 9-6 overall record heading into the final two games of the regular season. Barrett has been a key figure in the offensive output as she leads the Tigers with nine goals and 20 total points. Wittenberg is 6-1 this season when Barrett scores.

Barrett is from Powell, Ohio and graduated from Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus in June.

Meyer, from Solon, Ohio and a graduate of Hathaway Brown High School, was among five players listed on the "Honor Roll" on the Web site last week after she posted a pair of shutouts. A first-team All-NCAC, first-team all-region and third-team All-America selection in 2002, Meyer ranks third in the conference in saves percentage with a mark of .832 and she has recorded three shutouts on the season.
