Tigers Come Out on Top Over Wooster

The Tigers took a huge step toward capturing the North Coast Athletic Conference title Sunday, handily defeating the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 4-1, at Edwards-Maurer Field. Wittenberg, which bounced back extemely well from its first defeat of the season last Sunday against heading into this week's action with a perfect 5-0 record.nationally ranked Division II power Mercyhurst, is alone in first place in the NCAC.

Sophomore Merrill Ackermann (Norwalk, Conn./Staples) opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 2959 mark of the first half. Then sophomore Emily Duh (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) took over, turning a hat trick with two first-half goals in a span of less than two minutes and a second-half goal that put the Tigers ahead by an insurmountable 4-0 advantage.

Senior Kelly McMullen (East Amherst, NY/The Nichols School), Ackemann and sophomore Jill Hobelman (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duschesne) had the assists in the contest. McMullen ranks among the conference leaders in scoring with an average of two points per game.

Junior goaltender Georgina Klinzing (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland) recorded nine saves in the contest while yielding just one goal late in the game.

Wittenberg got some good news Sunday, learning that the field hockey team was ranked No. 18 in the country by a Columbus Multimedia poll.
