Tigers Overtake Dubuque In Season Opener From The Road

Dubuque, IA – The Wittenberg Tiger football team traveled to Iowa to take on the University of Dubuque for the first time in program history. The Tigers came away with a hard-fought 28-27 win, posting 14 unanswered points in the fourth-quarter.

Wittenberg bounced back from a 14-0 deficit after the first quarter, cutting the Spartans lead in half just less than two-minutes into the second quarter. Garrett Gross put the Tigers on the board with a one-yard touchdown run, capping off a 76-yard drive.

Dubuque extended the lead back out to 14 points by striking first in the third quarter, going 62 yards in three plays, making it a 21-7 game.

Tyler May ignited a spark in the Wittenberg sideline with an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown, bringing the Tigers back to withing seven, 21-14.

Dubuque would go up by two scores with just under three and a half minutes in the third quarter. Unable to convert on what proved to be a pivotal point after attempt, the Spartans would only lead, 27-14, after Mario Getaw got a hand in on the blocked kick attempt.

Wittenberg would find Bryce Anderson for their final two scores of the afternoon. First on the ground for a one-yard score to cap off an 89-yard drive. Anderson tallied his second score of the afternoon, reeling in a five-yard touchdown pass from Max Milton.

In just his second career start, Milton completed 26 of 38 passes for 275 yards. Milton worked the ball to four different Tiger receivers for multiple receptions on the afternoon. Dean Tate led all Tiger receivers with 13 catches for 186-yards.

Anthony Pedro had a team-leading 11 tackles on the defensive side of the ball, including four solo takedowns. Cameron Snurr, Dane Flatter and Getaw each added four solo tackles for the Tiger defense on the day.
