Wittenberg Football Sends Off Seniors With Win Over Wooster

Springfield, OH --  The Wittenberg Tiger football team wrapped up their 2021 season with a 44-29 win over the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. Before the day kicked-off, the Tigers honored 24 seniors for their continuous hard work and dedication to the Wittenberg football program both on and off the field. As a unit, the graduating group of Wittenberg seniors amassed a 22-7 record, including a 21-5 North Coast Athletic Conference record with two NCAC titles.

The Tigers got off to a slow start, with their only points in the first quarter coming off the Christian Sweet blocked punt through the back of the Wooster endzone. Garrett Gross got the 28-point second quarter started for the Tiger offense with a two-yard dive into the Wooster endzone, capping off the 75-yard scoring drive. Wittenberg went back to the run game twice more in the quarter with senior quarterback Bobby Froehlich, finding the endzone on the four-yard scoring rush. Reed Hall broke off a 35-yard run on the second play of the drive, as it took the Tiger offense just 43-seconds to find the Wooster endzone. Wittenberg executed their two-minute drill to perfection, marching the length of the field, capped off with a Jake Saus seven-yard touchdown reception from Collin Brown. Saus capped off his career-day with two more touchdowns in the second half, capping off the eight-play 93-yard scoring drive with the five-yard scoring reception. Saus ended the day, reeling in the 57-yard catch and run, putting Wittenberg ahead, 44-24.

The Tigers accumulated over 500 yards of offense on the day, delivering the balanced attack with 274 yards through the air and 263 yards coming on the ground. Wittenberg finished with two receivers, racking up over 100 yards, with Saus tallying 128 on eight targets. Gene Nobles capped off his Tiger career with six receptions for 101 yards. Gross had his second 100+ rushing game of the season, amassing 129 yards on 19 carries. Connor Walls was the plug for the Tiger defense up front, leading the way with six tackles. Walls tallied 2.5 sacks in the first half along, setting the Fighting Scots offense back 16-yards. Jordan Burkey capped off his Tiger career with both an interception and a forced fumble, causing havoc from the secondary with five tackles. Julio Novarini, Cameron Snurr and Matt Render would all get into the Wooster backfield for a sack of the Fighting Scots quarterback.
