Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg football team celebrated the grand opening of its new HWA Complex, as the Wittenberg campus welcomed back Tigers of the past for the 2019 Homecoming weekend festivities. Wittenberg fell to the Big Red from Denison University 24-14, as the rain poured down at Edwards-Maurer Field. The Tiger offense outgained the Big Red 341 to 338 on the afternoon, picking up 20 first downs along the way. Wittenberg gained 252 yards through the air, as quarterback Bobby Froehlich completed 24 of 36 pass attempts with one touchdown.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Wittenberg wasted no time getting the offense started, taking their first possession 38-yards in five plays, with Sam Kayser taking a 27-yard pass from Froehlich into the Denison endzone. Denison took a 10-7 lead into the half with the Big Red converting on a 21-yard field goal attempt at the end of the first quarter to put their first score on the board. The Big Red added one more score before the end of the first half, capping off a 15-play 82-yard drive. Wittenberg came out in the second half on the attack, with Jaheem Washington capping off an eight-play drive with a 19-yard touchdown run. The Wittenberg offense slowed up down the stretch, as the Tiger's attack came up short. The Wittenberg defense forced Denison into a ground attack, allowing the Big Red quarterback to complete just 4 of 13 passes on the day. John Harris and Trevor Good led the Tiger defense with nine tackles on the afternoon. Good forced a Denison fumble in the early stages of the game, allowing Logan Jewsikow to jump on the recovery for Wittenberg. Jordan Burkey, Troy Jones, and Micah Vann each added four solo stops for the Tiger defense, with each adding a tackle for a loss to their total.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 taking on the Yeomen from Oberlin College from Edwards-Maurer Field. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM.
