Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg Tigers football team made their way home to Edwards-Maurer Field for the first time on Saturday afternoon, hosting NCAC foe the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Tigers celebrated Champion's Night with a 14-12 win over the Scots, while honoring the national championship teams from 1964, 1969 and the 1974 National Runner's Up, along with the conference champions from the 1974, 1999, 2009 and 2014 seasons. Wittenberg racked up nearly 400 yards of offense on the day, utilizing both the ground and the air to secure the win. The Tigers accumulated 236 yards through the air, averaging nearly 10 yards per play, along with a stable of backs picking up over 150 yards on the ground.

Game Breakdown

It was a defensive stalemate through the first quarter of action, as neither team was able to put points on the board. Wittenberg was the first to find the endzone, as Bobby Froehlich found Thad Snodgrass on the receiving end of a 53-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage. Wooster took the ensuing possession down for their first points, as the Scots converted on a 25-yard field goal attempt. The Tiger offense put together one more successful drive in the third quarter, as DeShawn Sarley put the Red and White ahead 14-3 on the eight-yard catch and run from Froehlich. After another successful Wooster field goal late in the third, Wooster found the end-zone for the first time late in the fourth quarter but unsuccessfully converted the two-point attempt after.

The Wittenberg defense had another good showing to start the season, holding the Scots to less than 300 total yards of offense on the day. The Scots were held to just 4.6 yards through the air and five yards per attempt on the ground. Jonathan Seay led the Wittenberg defense with nine tackles while picking up one Wooster fumble. Nasir Carter, Logan Jewsikow and Tavian Crowe each finished the day with five tackle apiece. Danny Foster kept the Wooster wideouts to limited receptions, breaking up four passes and adding three tackles on the day. Jordan Burkey posted the second Tiger takeaway on the day with an interception to go along with his two tackles.

UP NEXT

The Tigers will travel to Greencastle, IN to take on NCAC foe DePauw on Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM. Wittenberg will return to Edwards-Maurer Field on Saturday, Oct. 12 to host Community Day when they take on the Allegheny Gators. Community Day events start at 11:00 AM with kickoff set for Noon.
