No. 12 Tigers Celebrate Homecoming With 47-28 Win Over Hiram

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg Tiger football team celebrated the 2018 Homecoming weekend with a 47-28 win over the Terriers of Hiram College on Saturday afternoon from Edwards-Maurer Field. The Tigers jumped out to a commanding 35-7 lead after the first half, holding the Terriers scoreless through the second and third quarters of action. It would be yet another record-breaking night for the signal caller Jake Kennedy as the quarterback put his name at the top spot of the career passing yards category. Kennedy overtakes the previous record set by Aaron Huffman in 2009 at 6,446.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After Sam Kayser put the first Tiger points on the board with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Wittenberg would be back on the attack just minutes later as Kennedy would find Jeff Tiffner open on the outside in the early going, connecting for a 19-yard catch and score in the corner of the end-zone giving Wittenberg the 14-0 advantage. The Terriers would find their way into the end-zone midway through the first quarter, cutting the Tiger lead in half. Wittenberg would keep the Terriers off the board for 30-minutes of football, as the Tigers were able to find the end-zone three more times before the intermission. Kennedy would connect with Bryce Bailey for his first of two touchdowns of the second quarter, starting with a four-yard pass to put the Tigers up 21-7. Troy Clay rolled into the end-zone from one-yard out, extending the Wittenberg lead to 28-7. Bailey reeled in his second TD reception of the quarter going for 39-yards with just over five minutes left in the quarter. Jaheem Washington opened the Wittenberg scoring in the second half, marching the Tigers down the field and finishing the drive off with a one-yard scoring run with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

WHO STOOD OUT:

Kennedy would finish his day completing 14 of 19 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns. The Tiger offense would display plenty of weapons both on the ground and through the air. Liam Duncan reeled in two catches for a total of 103-yards, going for a long of 60-yards. Finishing the day with two TD's, Bailey would end the day with four receptions and 62-yards. Washington and Clay would each get 10 touches on the ball from the backfield, as Washington would lead all Tiger ball carriers with 122-yards. Clay would add 67-yards on the day, providing a long of 37-yards with two TD's. Jordan Burkey came up with an interception for the Tiger defense, taking the return back for 34-yards and into Hiram territory. Michael Ford and Terrance Crowe would lead the Tiger defense, finishing with eight tackles each.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when they travel to Allegheny for an NCAC showdown with the Gators at 1:00 PM.
