#23 Wittenberg Moves Past Oberlin 35-3

OBERLIN, Ohio—Wittenberg football moved to 7-1 on the season with a 35-3 win over Oberlin College on Saturday. For the second straight game, the Tigers held their opponent to negative rushing yards. The Yeomen of Oberlin were only able to muster negative-two rushing yards on 29 total attempts in Saturday's NCAC matchup. A week ago, Wittenberg held Hiram College to negative rushing yards in a 40-0 victory.  Wittenberg started slow offensively on Saturday, but the Tigers did what they had to do defensively to stifle the Yeomen, as Wittenberg surpassed their season average of 31 points.

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • The Tigers drew first blood on Saturday, as Will Gingery sent a 20-yard field-goal through the uprights with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Wittenberg would not add points again until there were five minutes remaining in the second quarter, as Luke Bowling hauled in a pass from Jake Kennedy to cap off a 58 yard scoring drive, as the Tigers went up 10-3.
  • Early in the third quarter, Wittenberg leaned on Gingery again, as the senior capitalized on a 23-yard field goal to put the Tigers up 13-3.
  • DeShawn Sarley got in on the scoring action for the Tigers in the third, as the sophomore back broke off a 16 yard run to cap off a 28-second scoring drive for the Tigers, as the team went up 19-3.
  • The Tigers recorded a safety in the fourth quarter to go up 28-3, before Jeff Tiffner returned a punt 50-yards for a touchdown at the end of the game to seal the deal at 35-3.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

  • Bowling and Sarley combined for nearly 200-yards of offense in the win, as the duo also posted two touchdowns on Saturday.
  • Bowling now leads the Tigers with 42 receptions in 2016, as the senior wide-out has gone for 445 yards and four touchdowns thus far.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

  • Jack Kayser led the Tigers with 15 total tackles and four pass breakups for a defensive unit that was firing on all cylinders on Saturday.
  • The Tigers held the Yeomen to negative-two yards on the ground, as senior linebacker Terrance Crowe recorded eight tackles, including three sacks in the drubbing.
  • Dustin Holmes, Austin Towsey, Brandon Daniels, Josh Link and Bobby Saul would all record sacks in Saturday's game, as the red and white managed to take down Oberlin's quarterback seven times.
  • Wittenberg held Oberlin to 15 first downs on Saturday, as the Yeomen averaged 3.5 yards per play in the game.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Tiffner's punt-return-touchdown is the first return touchdown for the Tigers in 2016, as the return-man averaged 23 yards on three attempts on Saturday.
  • Gingery went two-for-two on Saturday in field goal attempts, as the kicker-punter also recorded six punts for 286 yards, including five inside the 20.
