#15 Wittenberg Outlasts DePauw 21-10 on Homecoming to Move to 5-0

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—#15 Wittenberg remained unbeaten on Saturday against the DePauw Tigers in a game that saw 31 first-half points. Oddly enough, those 31 points would be the end of the scoring for both teams, as defense was the story of the second half for both sides. The 21-10 lead that Wittenberg took into halftime would stand at the end of Saturday's game, with Wittenberg moving up to 5-0 (4-0) in 2016.

Wittenberg's nationally ranked defense stayed true to form, holding the Tigers of DePauw to 95 yards on the ground on Saturday. The Tigers forced DePauw into season lows on offense, as the team from Greencastle came into the game averaging 48.3 points per-game, and only produced ten on Saturday. Wittenberg commands the NCAC at 4-0 in conference play, as the #15 team in the land improves to 5-0 overall in 2016.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

  • The Tiger defense forced DePauw into seven punts, a turnover on-down, and a lost fumble, after allowing a TD on the second offensive drive of the game.
  • Wittenberg didn't intercept a pass for the first time on the year, but senior linebacker Terrance Crowe made sure the Tigers produced a turnover, as the Springfield product stripped DePauw's quarterback clean in the second quarter.
  •  Carter Harris won the battle at the bottom of the pile for Wittenberg, recovering DePauw's miscue.
  •  Corey Dieringer had a standout game for the Tigers, as the freshman defensive-back covered every assignment that was asked of him, while making a career-high 14.
  • Crowe paced the Tigers as a unit, recording 16 tackles to go along with his forced-fumble, as the Tiger defense stopped DePauw in their tracks.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

  • Kennedy's streak of games with three touchdown passes ended on Saturday, but only because the sophomore signal caller let one of his favorite targets get in on the action.
  •  Luke Bowling caught a screen and lofted a spiral to a wide-open Luke Landis on a trick-play touchdown midway through the second quarter.
  • The trick-play put the Tigers up 14-10, ending a drive that totaled one play, after the Tigers took over after Crowe's forced-fumble.
  • Landis' touchdown grab from his fellow wide-out was the senior's sixth touchdown reception of the year, and the second NCAC game that the Brookville native has hauled in two scores.
  • His 111 yards receiving is the third time in 2016 that Landis has gone over the century mark receiving.
  • Wittenberg's freshman running backs, Jaheem Washington and Nick Kendall, combined for nearly 120 yards on the ground, with both backs breaking off runs of 24 yards or more.
  • Rounding out his productive day offensively, Bowling found himself on the receiving end of a touchdown pass, as Kennedy hooked up with the wide-out to go up 21-10 with under a minute to play before half-time.

UP NEXT

  • Wittenberg returns to action on October 15, when the Tigers travel to Granville to take on the Denison Big Red.
  • Kickoff is set for 7:00PM.
