Baseball caps 6-0 week with 10-5 win over Bluffton, extends win streak to 11 games

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg baseball team increased its current win streak to 11 games, capping a 6-0 week with a 10-5 victory over Bluffton in non-conference play on Sunday.

The Basics

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomore Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) was 2-for-5 with a home run to go with four RBIs and one run.
  • Sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) tallied a pair of hits with one RBI and one run.
  • Junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had one hit, one RBI and two runs.
  • Freshman Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, Ohio/South) had one hit, one RBI, one run and one stolen base.
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) earned the win on the mound for the Tigers to improve to 4-3 on the season. He allowed just one run on one hit and one walk while striking out six over five innings.
  • Ezra Deitering, Ayden Spriggs and Seth Altman had one home run each for Bluffton.

The Game

  • Wittenberg opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Seibert drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single from Chilicki. A two-out RBI single from Nemunaitis put the Tigers up 1-0, and freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) followed by reaching base via a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Freshman Jalen Williams (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) made it a 2-0 Wittenberg lead with an RBI single.
  • The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Moore followed a leadoff single from junior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) with a two-run homer, and Dietz later added a two-out RBI single to put the Tigers up 5-0.
  • The Beavers scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth on a solo home run.
  • A solo homer and RBI single brought the Beavers within two, 5-3, in the top of the eighth inning.
  • The Tigers extended their lead to 10-3 with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, which was highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Moore and an RBI single from Seibert.
  • The Beavers capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Bluffton 11-6 in the game, and each team committed two errors.

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 153-111 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Moore has 152 hits, 22 doubles and 116 RBIs in his career. He is tied for fourth all-time in RBIs and is 14 hits and 14 doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) has 150 hits, 33 doubles, 16 home runs, 114 RBIs, 116 runs scored in his career. He is tied for fifth all-time at Wittenberg in home runs, tied for sixth in RBIs and is 16 hits, three doubles and seven runs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 133 hits and 32 doubles in his career. He is 33 hits and four doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
