Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan, increases win streak to 10 games

DELAWARE — The Wittenberg baseball team swept a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Tigers won the opening game 13-3 in seven innings and closed out the sweep with a 5-4 victory in Game 2.

Stat Leaders - Game 1

  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) was 3-for-4 with a double to go with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) was 2-for-3 with a double to go with three RBIs and one run.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) was 2-for-4 with a double to go with two RBIs and one run.
  • Senior Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added one hit and two RBIs, and junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) tallied one hit and three runs.
  • Senior Nick Cunningham (Fredericktown, Oho/Fredericktown) pitched all seven innings for the Tigers. He allowed just one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out six and improved to 2-2 on the season.

Game 1 - Wittenberg 13, Ohio Wesleyan 3

  • Wittenberg took an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on an OWU error, RBI sac fly from Rodriguez, 2-RBI double from Moore and RBI single from Gryskevich.
  • The Battling Bishops answered with one run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second, making the score 5-3.
  • The Tigers added five more runs in the top of the fourth inning, getting an RBI double from Thomas, RBI single from sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills), 2-RBI double from Rodriguez and RBI sac fly from Gryskevich to increase the lead to 10-3.
  • Wittenberg was able to end the game early via the 10-run mercy rule after scoring three runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Thomas and brining two runners home via wild pitches.
  • Wittenberg out-hit OWU by a 12-5 margin and committed one error to the Bishops' four.

Stat Leaders - Game 2

  • Nemunaitis led the Tiger offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to go with one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run to go with three RBIs and two runs.
  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) tallied two hits.
  • Gryskevich had one hit and one RBI.
  • Junior Charlie Schafer (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) earned the win on the mound for the Tigers, improving to 2-1 on the season. He pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two.
  • Senior Austin Luther (Hughesville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) started on the mound for the Tigers. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 6.1 innings.
  • Edrick Padilla led the OWU offense with a home run and double to go with four RBIs and one run.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 5, Ohio Wesleyan 4

  • Padilla got the scoring started with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bishops an early lead.
  • Wittenberg got an RBI single from Rodriguez in the second and RBI double from Nemunaitis in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • An RBI double from Padilla put OWU up 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Tigers got within 4-3 on an RBI single from Gryskevich in the top of the sixth.
  • In the top of the ninth, Nemunaitis led off by reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, and Rodriguez followed with a two-run homer to put the Tigers up 5-4.
  • Schafer closed out the Wittenberg victory with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth on a pair of groundouts and a popout.
  • Wittenberg out-hit OWU by a 12-7 margin and committed one error to the Bishops' two.

  • O'Malley has 150 hits, 33 doubles, 16 home runs, 114 RBIs, 116 runs scored in his career. He is tied for fifth all-time at Wittenberg in home runs and RBIs and is 16 hits, three doubles and seven runs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Thomas has 133 hits and 32 doubles in his career. He is 33 hits and four doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Luther has 135 career strikeouts, and Cunningham has 118 career strikeouts.
