Baseball tallies 20 hits in 18-7 win over Cedarville

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg baseball team tallied 20 hits, including seven for extra bases, in an 18-7 win over NCAA Division II foe Cedarville on Tuesday.

The Basics

  • Junior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was 4-for-4 with a double to go with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) was 4-for-6 with a double and three runs.
  • Sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) had a home run and double to go with five RBIs and two runs.
  • Sophomore James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) was 3-for-3 with with four RBIs and two runs.
  • Junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to go with two RBIs and one run.
  • Senior Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was 2-for-3 with a double to go with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) earned the win on the mound for the Tigers to improve to 2-3 on the season.
  • Freshman Tommy Anthony (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate Institute) pitched the final three innings for Wittenberg and allowed just one hit while striking out three to earn a save.

The Game

  • Wittenberg opened the scoring with a three-run homer from Nemunaitis in the bottom of the first inning. That marked Nemunaitis' team-leading sixth home run of the season.
  • The Tigers added to their lead with RBI singles from MacAuley and Seibert in the second inning, making it 5-0.
  • After Cedarville plated a run on an error in the top of the third, Wittenberg added seven runs in the bottom of the frame for a 12-1 lead. The Tigers' runs came via an RBI walk to senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth), 2-RBI double from Gryskevich, RBI single from MacAuley, RBI double from Seibert and 2-RBI single from Royer.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the top of the fourth, making the score 12-5.
  • The Tigers increased their lead to 14-5 in the bottom of the fourth, as Nemunaitis scored on a wild pitch and O'Malley came home on a sac fly from MacAuley.
  • Cedarville added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, and Wittenberg plated one in the bottom of the frame on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge).
  • The Tigers added another run in the seventh courtesy of an RBI single from MacAuley and two more in the eighth on a 2-RBI double from Nemunaitis.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Cedarville by a 20-9 margin and committed four errors to the Yellow Jackets' three.

  • O'Malley has 137 hits, 31 doubles, 15 home runs and 109 RBIs in his career. He is tied for sixth all-time at Wittenberg in home runs and tied for ninth all-time in RBIs and is 29 hits and five doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Thomas has 122 hits and 29 doubles in his career. He is 44 hits and seven doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
