O'Malley homers twice as Baseball drops doubleheader to Adrian

SPRINGFIELD — Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) hit a pair of home runs Sunday as the Wittenberg baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Adrian, falling 5-4 in Game 1 and 5-3 in Game 2.

Stat Leaders - Game 1

  • O'Malley and sophomores Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) and James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) each hit a home run for the Tigers.
  • Junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohi/Lake) had a team-high two hits, including a double, for Wittenberg.
  • Senior Nick Cunningham (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) got the pitching start for the Tigers. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings in a no-decision.
  • Junior Charlie Schafer (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) pitched 2.1 scoreless relief innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four.
  • Nic Bruder and David Kedrow each had a team-high two hits for the Bulldogs.

Game 1 - Adrian 5, Wittenberg 4

  • The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI sac fly.
  • A solo homer from O'Malley tied the score in the bottom of the second.
  • Back-to-back solo homers from Nemunaitis and MacAuley to lead off the bottom of the third put the Tigers up 3-1.
  • Adrian plated a run on an RBI single in the top of the fourth and added a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
  • A fielder's choice RBI from Seibert tied the score at 4-all in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Adrian led off the top of the ninth with a walk, and that runner advanced to second via a sac bunt and later came home to score on a Wittenberg error for what proved to be the winning run.
  • Adrian out-hit Wittenberg by a 9-6 margin and committed three errors to the Tigers' two.

Stat Leaders - Game 2

  • O'Malley and Seibert led the Wittenberg offense with two hits, one RBI and one run apiece. O'Malley hit his second home run of the day, and Seibert added his second double.
  • Freshman Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, Ohio/South) also had a double for the Tigers.
  • Junior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) added one hit and one RBI.
  • Senior Austin Luther (Hughesville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) got the pitching start for the Tigers and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out one over five innings.
  • Jakob Charles tallied a team-high three hits for the Bulldogs and was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings and recording five strikeouts.

Game 2 - Adrian 5, Wittenberg 3

  • The Bulldogs plated a run in each of the first and third innings and added a two-run homer in the top of the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
  • An RBI double from Seibert and RBI single from Royer cut the Tigers' deficit to two, 4-2, in the bottom of the fifth.
  • A solo home run extended the Bulldogs' lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh.
  • O'Malley led off the bottom of the ninth with his second home run of the day to get Wittenberg within 5-3, but the Tigers were unable to get any closer.
  • Adrian out-hit Wittenberg by a 9-6 margin and committed no errors to the Tigers' three.

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 140-109 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) has 133 hits, 21 doubles and 99 RBIs in his career. He is 33 hits, 15 doubles and 10 RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • O'Malley has 127 hits, 29 doubles, 14 home runs and 105 RBIs in his career. He ranks eighth all-time at Wittenberg in home runs and is 34 hits, seven doubles and four RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 112 hits and 27 doubles in his career. He is 54 hits and nine doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Luther has 122 career strikeouts, and Cunningham has 104 career strikeouts.
