Baseball tallies 21 hits in 23-8 win at Wilmington

WILMINGTON — The Wittenberg baseball team exploded offensively for a 23-8 win at Wilmington on Tuesday.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (7-8 overall), Wilmington (2-12 overall)
  • Venue: Tewksbury-Delaney Field - Wilmington, Ohio
  • This marked the Tigers' highest scoring game since a 27-7 win at Bluffton on April 12, 2023.

Stat Leaders

  • Freshman Cam Gladden (Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut) led the Wittenberg offense with three hits, including a double and a triple, to go with four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) recorded two hits, including a double, along with one run and a team-high five RBIs.
  • Junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) added three hits, including a double, along with one RBI and four runs.
  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) posted two hits, two RBIs, three runs and one stolen base.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) posted two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
  • Freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) added one hit, two walks, three RBIs and three runs.
  • Sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) got the pitching start for the Tigers and allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over two innings.
  • Junior Kyle Mahon (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) earned the win on the mound, improving to 2-0 on the season. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one.
  • Evan Kelsey led Wilmington with four hits in the game.

The Game

  • The Tigers got the scoring started with four runs in the top of the second inning via a walk, hit-by-pitch, wild pitch and RBI sac fly.
  • Wittenberg increased its lead to 5-0 with an RBI sac fly in the top of the third.
  • The Quakers plated three runs in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to two, 5-3.
  • The Tigers answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth for a 12-3 lead. The runs came via a 2-RBI single from O'Malley, RBI single from Moore, RBI double from Seibert, 2-RBI single from Rodriguez and RBI single from Gladden.
  • Wittenberg plated two more runs in the sixth on a 2-RBI single from MacAuley, and an RBI triple from Gladden in the top of the eighth increased the Tigers' lead to 15-3.
  • The Quakers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth, making the score 15-8.
  • Wittenberg capped the scoring with an eighth-run ninth inning, getting an RBI double from senior Mitch Macy (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights), RBI single from junior Caleb Fogarty (Troy, Ohio/Troy), 2-RBI double from Gladden, 2-RBI double from MacAuley, RBI double from Quintin Applegate (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) and RBI sac fly from freshman Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, Ohio/South).
  • Wittenberg out-hit Wilmington by a 21-14 margin and committed no errors to the Quakers' two.

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 140-107 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Moore has 132 hits, 21 doubles and 99 RBIs in his career. He is 34 hits, 15 doubles and 10 RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • O'Malley has 119 hits, 29 doubles, 12 home runs and 103 RBIs in his career. He is 42 hits, seven doubles, one home run and six RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 112 hits and 27 doubles in his career. He is 54 hits and nine doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
