Baseball falls to Eastern Connecticut State, Marietta in BSN Sports Invitational

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg baseball team fell 18-7 to Eastern Connecticut State and 9-6 to Marietta on Sunday in the BSN Sports Invitational.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (6-8 overall), Eastern Connecticut State (6-5 overall), Marietta (7-8 overall)
  • Venue: Don and Sue Schaly Field - Marietta, Ohio

Stat Leaders vs. Eastern Connecticut State

  • Sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills), freshman Cam Gladden (Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut) and sophomore James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) tallied two hits each to lead the Tiger offense.
  • One of Gladden's hits was a double, and junior Jalen Williams (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) and freshman Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, Ohio/South) each recorded a triple in the game. Dietz also had a team-best two RBIs.
  • Seven different pitchers took the mound for Wittenberg in the game. Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) got the start and pitched the first 2.1 innings.
  • The Warriors tallied 14 extra-base hits, including six home runs, in the game.

Game 1 - Eastern Conn. State 18, Wittenberg 7

  • The Tigers got on the board first with three runs after loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) hit a leadoff single, junior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was hit by a pitch, and junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) followed with a single. Moore scored on a groundout from freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County), and Royer and Seibert came home on back-to-back singles from senior Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and MacAuley.
  • The Warriors plated nine runs in the top of the third and added five more in the top of the fourth for a 14-3 lead.
  • An RBI single from Nemunaitis made it 14-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh, making the score 17-7. The Tigers' runs in the seventh came via a 2-RBI triple from Dietz.
  • The Warriors capped the scoring with a run in the top of the eighth.
  • ECSU out-hit Wittenberg by a 21-15 margin, and each team committed one error.

Stat Leaders vs. Marietta

  • Seibert led the Wittenberg offense with two hits, two RBIs and one run scored.
  • Nemunaitis and MacAuley each recorded two hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Royer, Rodriguez and Gryskevich each hit a double in the game.
  • Senior Austin Luther (Hughesville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) got the pitching start for the Tigers. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings in a no-decision.
  • Ben Kaplin led the Marietta offense with two hits and three RBIs.

Game 2 - Marietta 9, Wittenberg 6

  • The Tigers opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning. MacAuley and Nemunaitis tallied RBI singles, and sophomore Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) added an RBI groundout.
  • The Pioneers plated a run in the bottom of the second and took a 5-3 lead with a pair of 2-RBI singles in the fourth.
  • Seibert plated a run for the Tigers when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth.
  • Marietta extended its lead to 6-4 with an RBI double in the sixth.
  • The Tigers tied the score at 6-all in the top of the seventh via an RBI single from Seibert, who later scored on a Pioneer error.
  • Marietta broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs via an RBI single and 2-RBI single.
  • In the top of the ninth, Royer was hit by a pitch with one out, and Seibert followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Gryskevich added a two-out walk to load the bases, but the Tigers were unable to take advantage.

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 139-107 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Moore has 130 hits, 21 doubles and 97 RBIs in his career. He is 36 hits, 15 doubles and 12 RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • O'Malley has 117 hits, 29 doubles, 12 home runs and 101 RBIs in his career. He is 44 hits, seven doubles, one home run and eight RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 112 hits and 27 doubles in his career. He is 54 hits and nine doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
