Baseball splits doubleheader at Asbury

WINCHESTER, Ky. — The Wittenberg baseball team split a doubleheader at Asbury on Sunday at George Rogers Clark High School. After falling 5-4 in 10 innings in Game 1, the Tigers rebounded for a 6-1 victory in Game 2.

Stat Leaders - Game 1

  • Junior Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) finished with a team-high four hits for Wittenberg.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) recorded three hits, including a double, and three RBIs.
  • Junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) added two hits.
  • Senior Nick Cunningham (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) got the pitching start for the Tigers. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six.
  • Junior Charlie Schafer (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) posted four strikeouts in 2.2 innings in relief.
  • Andrew Billington led the Eagle offense with two hits and an RBI.

Game 1 - Asbury 5, Wittenberg 4 (10 inn.)

  • The game was scoreless through six innings.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs via three consecutive singles from sophomore James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North), Seibert and sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills). Freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) followed with an RBI walk, and Moore added a 3-RBI double to put the Tigers up 4-0.
  • The Eagles posted a quick response with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a pair of RBI singles and a Tiger error.
  • Asbury tied the score at 4-all in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.
  • After a scoreless ninth inning, Royer hit a leadoff single in the top of the 10th, but the Tigers were unable to score.
  • The Eagles drew back-to-back one-out walks in the bottom of the 10th. Those runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and the lead runner came home to score the winning run on a single from Matthew Johnson.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Asbury by a 13-9 margin. Both teams committed two errors.

Stat Leaders - Game 2

  • Royer led the Tiger offense with two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs.
  • Seibert and senior Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) had two hits each. One of Seibert's hit was a double.
  • Sophomore Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) tallied one hit and two RBIs.
  • Senior Austin Luther (Hughesville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) got the pitching start for Wittenberg. He allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out five over seven innings to improve to 1-0 on the season.
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and senior Joe Horoszko (Seven Hills, Ohio/Saint Edward's) each pitched one inning in relief and recorded one strikeout apiece.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 6, Asbury 1

  • The Tigers opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning after loading the bases with no outs. Seibert hit a leadoff single, Nemunaitis was hit by a pitch, and Rodriguez followed with a single. After Moore reached on a fielder's choice, Royer reached on an error that scored Nemunaitis, and Chilicki followed with a 2-RBI single.
  • The Eagles plated a run in the bottom of the first inning on a passed ball.
  • The Tigers increased their lead to 5-1 on a 2-RBI triple from Royer in the top of the fourth.
  • Wittenberg capped the scoring with a sac groundout that plated MacAuley in the fifth inning.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Asbury by an 11-2 margin and committed three errors to the Eagles' one.

Records & Milestones

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 138-104 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Moore has 127 hits, 21 doubles and 96 RBIs in his career. He is 39 hits, 15 doubles and 13 RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories. He leads the team in hits (16) and RBIs (14) this season.
  • Luther has a 1.93 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 18.2 innings over three starts this season. In his career, he is 11-4 with 120 strikeouts and a 3.10 ERA. He is five wins and 31 strikeouts shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories. His career ERA ranks fourth all-time.
  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) has 112 hits, 28 doubles, 11 home runs and 100 RBIs in his career. He is 49 hits, eight doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 111 hits and 27 doubles in his career. He is 55 hits and nine doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
