Baseball drops doubleheader at No. 12 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Wittenberg baseball team fell 6-3 and 13-10 in a pair of seven-inning games at No. 12 Lynchburg on Tuesday.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (4-4 overall), Lynchburg (6-4 overall)

Stat Leaders - Game 1

  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) and sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) had two hits each to lead the Tiger offense. O'Malley also had an RBI.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) tallied one hit and one RBI each.
  • Royer and Nemunaitis had one double each to go with one from sophomore Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy).
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) got the pitching start for Wittenberg. He allowed four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three. Juniors Nate Floyd (Akron, Ohio/Copley) and Kyle Mahon (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) pitched in relief and tallied three strikeouts each.
  • Eric Hiett and Benton Jones hit home runs for Lynchburg and had three and two RBIs, respectively.
  • Domenic Rowlands earned the win on the mound for Lynchburg to improve to 2-0 on the season, and Mason McDowell picked up his second save of the year.

Game 1 - Lynchburg 6, Wittenberg 3

  • Wittenberg took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Moore and RBI double from Royer in the top of the first inning.
  • A three-run homer from Hiett and a solo shot from Jones put Lynchburg up 4-2 in the bottom of the third.
  • O'Malley cut the Tigers' deficit to 4-3 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth.
  • The Hornets capped the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and an RBI sac fly in the sixth.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Lynchburg by a 7-5 margin, and Lynchburg committed two errors to the Tigers' none.

Stat Leaders - Game 2

  • Nemunaitis had a team-high three hits for the Tigers to go with one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Senior Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) had two hits, including a grand slam, with a team-high five RBIs to go with two runs scored.
  • Chilicki, junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) tallied two hits each for Wittenberg.
  • In addition to Gryskevich's grand slam, the Tigers' extra-base hits included doubles from Chilicki and Royer.
  • Riley O'Donovan led the Hornets' offense with three hits, inclluding two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, for a team-best seven RBIs.

Game 2 - Lynchburg 13, Wittenberg 10

  • The Hornets got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Tigers tied the score in the top of the second via RBI singles from Gryskevich and Nemunaitis.
  • O'Donovan hit a solo homer to put Lynchburg up 3-2 in the bottom of the second.
  • Gryskevich's grand slam came in the top of the third and put Wittenberg up 6-3.
  • Lynchburg plated six runs in the bottom of the third, which included O'Donovan's grand slam, for a 9-6 lead.
  • An RBI sac fly from O'Malley and a 2-RBI double from Royer tied the score at 9-all in the top of the fourth.
  • The Hornets scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but an RBI single from Rodriguez in the top of the fifth tied the score at 10-10.
  • Lynchburg re-took the lead at 12-10 on a 2-RBI single from O'Donovan in the bottom of the fifth and capped the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Lynchburg by a 13-11 margin and committed one error to Lynchburg's none.

Records & Milestones

  • Eighth-year head coach Brian McGee is now 137-103 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • O'Malley has 112 hits, 28 doubles, 11 home runs and 100 RBIs in his career. He is 49 hits, eight doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) has 111 hits and 27 doubles in his career. He is 55 hits and nine doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
