Tigers Swing Hot Bats In Doubleheader Sweep of Calvin

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger baseball team made their home debut, defeating the Knights from Calvin University in the midweek doubleheader. With decisive wins in both games, the Tigers took game one, 11-2, before going on to win the final game in seven innings, 15-3.

The Tigers tallied 31 hits on the evening, with 12 hits coming in game one and 19 in game two.

Conor O'Malley, Chase Whisner, Parker Gryskevich and Michael Bronowski each recorded two hits in the first game of the series.

O'Malley went deep in back-to-back at-bats, for his second and third home runs of the season. O'Malley sent the first pitch deep to right center in the Tiger's first at-bat, giving Wittenberg a 2-0 lead. O'Malley went deep in his second at-bat in the bottom of the third, this time to left center, and extending the Tiger lead, 5-0.

Gryskevich got in on the home run action, following O'Malley's lead and going deep for his second home run of the season in the bottom of the first and giving Wittenberg the 4-0 lead.

A bases loaded walk to O'Malley in the fourth inning, extended the Tiger lead, 6-0. The Tiger scoring rally was capped off with a two-RBI single down the right field line by Gryskevic, making the Wittenberg lead, 10-0.

On the mound for the Tigers in game one, Nick Cunningham (2-2) secured his second win of the season with seven innings pitched. Allowing six hits and just one run and with five strikeouts and against 26 Calvin hitters. Charlie Schafer and Justin Maynard each put in one inning of work to close out the game with each given up one hit.

Wittenberg took care of business in seven innings against the Knights. This time tallying six doubles on 19 hits in the second game of the doubleheader. The Tigers scored every inning, but the fourth, in the shortened seven inning game.

Tiger leadoff hitter James MacAuley went 4 for 6 with five RBI and a pair of doubles. Maxwell Monachino and Ben Seibert tallied three hits apiece. Monachino drove in two runs and Seibert one.

Matt Moore, Bronowski, Rocco Royer and Ian Ash each added a pair of hits to the Tiger total.

Nate Floyd (1-0) earned his first win of the season, going five innings pitched with six hits allowed and striking out two. Michael Osmond shutdown the Knights for the final two innings, allowing three hits and striking out four. Osmond leading the Wittenberg pitching staff now has 21 on the season.
