Tigers Fall In Season Opener At Johns Hopkins

Baltimore, MD – The Wittenberg Tiger Baseball team began their 2023 season from the Johns Hopkins Invitation, taking on host Johns Hopkins in the opener. The Tigers fell to the Jays, 10-3, in their opening slate, posting seven hits with just one error in the field.

Wittenberg was first to strike, posting one run in the first and second inning, taking a quick 2-0 advantage. Matt Moore drove in the first Tiger run, plating Chase Whisner on the sacrifice fly to the right side. Luke Thomas plated the second Wittenberg run, bringing home Maxwell Monachino, with a single to right. The Wittenberg offense would go silent through the fifth, while Johns Hopkins took a 6-3 lead after their home at-bat.

Wittenberg responded in the top of the sixth with their final run of the day with a Conor O'Malley single down the line in right to bring around Thomas.

Nick Cunningham took the ball to start the first game on the bump for the Tigers in 2023. Cunningham tossed 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with one strikeout. Joe Horoszko came out of the bullpen for the first time, tossing 2.2 inning with six hits and three strikeouts. Kyle Mahon closed out the final two innings with one hit and one strikeout.
