Walk Off Homer Gives Tigers NCAC Opening Split With Denison

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger baseball team walked off with a win in the second game over No. 22 Denison University, 4-2, in game two of their NCAC opener on Saturday afternoon. With two outs, in the bottom of the ninth, Ian Ash sent a pinch-hit home run into the trees in left field at Carleton Davidson Stadium to help the Tigers split the day with the Big Red. The Tigers tallied 20 hits between the two games on the day.

Wittenberg held the Big Red scoreless for the first six innings of action, taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dylan Jackson put Wittenberg on the board with a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Chase Whisner and Jack Siefert. Austin Luther put in six innings of work to start game two for the Tigers, with just two hits allowed and striking out six Big Red hitters. Denison fought their way back into the game in the seventh inning, plating two runs to bring things back to even at 2-2. Justin Maynard shut the door on the Big Red offense throughout the final three innings, giving up two hits and fanning three Denison batters. Along the way, Maynard picked up his fourth win of the season moving to 4-0.

Conor O'Malley homered in his third consecutive game for the Tigers in game one, as Wittenberg suffered the tough 12-6 loss. Though the Tigers would collect more hits than the Big Red, 14-13. Austin Morrow, Matt Moore, Luke Thomas, Jackson and Siefert all tallied multiple hits for the Tiger offense to get the day started. Wittenberg went to Joe Horoszko to start game one against the Big Red, putting in five innings of work. Horoszko gave up eight hits with four strikeouts against 26 Denison batters faced.

Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, April 6 continuing NCAC action, traveling to Wabash College. First pitch of the doubleheader against the Little Giants is set for 12:00 pm.
