Hollinshead Hot Bat Propels Tigers Over Terriers

Springfield, OH – It was a beautiful day to take in a Wittenberg Tigers baseball game from Carleton Davidson Stadium, and Jack Hollinshead was sure to put on a show for the Tiger fans. The senior went 3 for 4 in game one against the Terriers, smashing three home runs with a grand slam, tallying six RBIs and three runs scored. It was the second three-homer game for Hollinshead in his career, dating back to April 3, 2019, when the Red and White defeated Wabash 15-3. The Tigers took down the Terriers 22-3 in game one of the two-game series, securing the sweep with a game-two 15-5 win. Wittenberg has put together a 7-0 win-streak to open the 2021 season, the longest active streak since the Red and White opened up the 2012 season 5-0. The Tigers are currently on a six-game win-streak at their home field of Carleton Davidson Stadium, the Red and White are one game shy of matching a seven-game home win-streak from the 2007 Tigers.

Game One Breakdown

Hollinshead opened the Tiger scoring with a solo homer to left in the top of the first inning. The Wittenberg offense exploded in the second inning, posting seven runs. Hiram was unable to command the strike zone in the second inning, as the first two Tiger runs were walked in. After Patrick Kenny took the hit by a pitch, Hollinshead launched his second homer of the game, clearing the bases to give Wittenberg the 8-1 advantage. After another Tiger run crossed in the third, Wittenberg poured on six more runs in the fourth inning adding seven more in the fifth. Hollinshead ignited the six-run fourth inning for the Tigers with his third homer of the game, putting the Red and White up 10-0. Kenny capped off the inning with a three-RBI double to right-center, pushing the Tiger advantage to 15-0. Wittenberg hit three doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning coming off the bats of Lane Johnson, Gabe Stacy, and Ian Ash, helping add to the Tiger lead. Not to be overlooked, Wittenberg saw a great pitching performance from Tanner Griggs. Griggs earned his second win of the season moving to 2-0, tossing six innings with six hits allowed while striking out six Terriers. Logan Wiggenhorn came in for one inning of work allowing one hit and striking out two.

Game Two Breakdown

Game two saw a line-up of new faces for the Tigers, as Wittenberg broke open the scoring in the first inning. Wittenberg scored in every inning but the sixth, going on a scoring rally from the second through the fourth, as the Red and White posted three, three, and four runs to helping push their lead out to 11-2. The Tigers kept the long balls flying out of the park from Carleton Davidson Stadium as Matt Moore crushed a three-RBI homer over the fence in left in the bottom of the second, pushing the Wittenberg lead out to 4-0. Tanner Boros joined the Sunday home run club with a solo shot down the line in the left, getting the rally started in the third inning. The Tiger offense kept the rally going in the fourth innings, starting with a Mason Davis double down the line in left scoring Hollinshead and Connor Goss. Boros launched his second homer of the day, going the opposite direction over the fence in right-center adding to the Tiger lead. Connor O'Malley capped off the Tiger scoring rally with a double in the gap to right-center. Boros kept the hot bat rolling in the bottom of the seventh, with a double to left-center, driving in Hollinshead for the 13th Tiger run.

Joe Horoszko picked moved to 2-0 on the season, tossing six innings with eight hits allowed and three strikeouts. Matt Shanor tossed 1.2 innings with two hits surrendered and two strikeouts.
