Tigers Drop Road Series At DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. – The Wittenberg University baseball took to the road to take on the Tigers of DePauw in an NCAC road doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Wittenberg dropped both games of the series, falling in the first game by a narrow 4-3 margin, before going on to drop game two, 11-6.

Game One Breakdown

It was a tight battle through the early going, as DePauw held a 1-0 advantage through the first five innings of action. After DePauw added three more runs to their lead in the sixth inning, holding a 4-0 advantage heading into the seventh inning. The Red and White found their offense with three runs crossing the plate in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Hayden Knox drew the walk to bring home the first Wittenberg run of the day. Gabe Stacy followed up with a two-RBI single to left field, bringing around Mason Davis and Ryan Probst for the final two runs of the Wittenberg scoring rally.

Rusty Hayhurst took the hill to start game one for Wittenberg, putting in just over four innings of work and allowing four hits. Adam Mays closed out the game with three and two-thirds innings pitched, with three hits allowed, while striking out three.

Game Two Breakdown

After DePauw got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Ryan Probst put the first Wittenberg on the board in the top of the third with a triple to left center to bring around Matt Baker. Wittenberg brought the game back to even later in the third with some heads up baserunning by Probst, as he came home to score on the DePauw passed ball. DePauw regained the lead in the bottom half of the third inning by plating two more runs. Probst would execute the sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning to perfection, bringing home Stacy as the Red and White chipped away at the DePauw lead. A single by Jack Hollinshead to left field brought around Baker to tie things back up at 4-4, before heading into the bottom half of the inning. DePauw posted seven runs in the bottom half of the fourth, taking an 11-4 lead over Wittenberg. The Red and White responded with one run in the sixth and seventh innings. Hollinshead logged his second RBI single of the day in the sixth inning, before Knox ripped a homer to right field in the top half of the seventh, cutting the DePauw advantage to 11-6 eventually falling short in the end.

Michael Martin got the start in game two for the Red and White, putting in two and thirds innings of work while allowing seven hits. Brandon Beegle tossed one inning with three hits allowed and striking out one. Matt Shanor closed out the game for Wittenberg with two hits allowed and striking out one.

UP NEXT

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 20 to host the Lords of Kenyon College in an NCAC doubleheader and celebrate Senior Day from Carleton Davidson Stadium. First pitch of the series is set for 12:00 PM.
