Tigers Take Dramatic Game Two Split From Trine

Springfield, OH– After a late burst of scoring, the Wittenberg Tigers fell to the Trine Thunder 8-2 in game one of the series at Carleton-Davidson stadium. The Tigers bounced back with an explosive game-two win, taking down Trine 20-19 in the second game of the day. The Tigers tried to climb back in the second and third innings of game one, after falling behind due to an early three-run home run, but Wittenberg responded with four home runs of their own in the second game. The Wittenberg offense was fueled by four home runs and eight extra-base hits in the final game against the Thunder. The final series scheduled for Sunday afternoon was canceled and the season series will remain split at 1-1. Wittenberg now moves to 5-4 on the season with five more out of conference games on the docket before NCAC action opens up at the end of the month.

Game One Breakdown

The top of the first did not bode well for the Tigers with a three-run home run off starting pitcher Michael Martin. The Tigers went down in order at the bottom of the first with Matt Baker grounding out to third, Hayden Knox lining out to center field, and Ryan Probst grounding out to second. In the bottom of the second, Jack Hollinshed scored off of Jack Siefert's ground out to second base, putting the Tigers on the scoreboard, down 3-1. The scoring continued for the Tigers in the bottom of the third with a Probst single to center field that drove in Gage Carpenter. Both the fourth and fifth innings went by quickly with Brandon Beegle coming in to pitch in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Thunder scored off an error in right field, putting the game at 4-2. The Thunder scored three more times in the seventh, as the Tigers were unable to put together an offensive attack to score in the bottom of the seventh. After three Trine runs were scored, Matt Shanor came in for some relief and to close the game.

Game Two Breakdown

It was an action filled game two, with 39 runs scored combined between the two sides. The Wittenberg offense came alive, posting multiple runs in three separate innings, leading to an early 17-6 advantage through four innings. Knox, Siefert, Brock Tatum and Carpenter each tagged a shot to leave the ballpark. Carpenter and Knox added a double each with Baker and Hollinshead coming up with a double for the Red and White's offensive showcase in game two, as the Tigers tallied eight extra-base hits. Knox led the Wittenberg offense with three hits and six RBI's, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to start the Tiger scoring rally. Baker tallied two hits with four runs and two RBI's. Baker also swiped two bases, with aggressive Tiger base running, Probst added two stolen bases with the team total running up to seven stolen bags by the end of the game. Siefert went 4 for 5 from the dish, crossing the plate three times with one run knocked in. Tanner Griggs took the hill to start the game for Wittenberg, tossing four innings and striking out four with 10 hits allowed. Adam Mays came in for 2 and two-thirds innings of work, picking up the win, striking out three with six hits allowed.

The Tigers will continue action on Tuesday, March 19th, the traveling to Capital University to play a double-header. First pitch against the Crusader is set for 1:00 PM.
