Maryville, Tenn. – The Wittenberg University baseball team suffered back-to-back losses on the road to the Scots of Maryville University. The Tigers dropped a hard-fought first game 6-4 in seven innings, before going down in game two 5-4. Wittenberg collected 11 hits on the afternoon, recording six in game one and five in the final game of the series.
Game One Breakdown
Wittenberg struck first, taking the early lead in the top of the first inning. Patrick Kenny brought in Matt Baker on the RBI groundout to the right side of the infield. Maryville responded by scoring their first run of the game in the bottom half of the second inning. The home team added to their advantage, scoring three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. Wittenberg began to cut into the Maryville advantage, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Tiger rally was kicked off by a Jack Siefert single to third, scoring Brock Tatum. With the bases loaded, the Tigers pushed across their second run of the inning when Mason Davis took an inside pitch for a free base. Gage Carpenter pushed across the final Wittenberg run of the day, drawing the bases loaded walk to score Kenny.
Michael Martin took the mound to start game one against the Scots, tossing five innings and striking out four. Jacob Muhleman closed out the game, allowing one hit with one strikeout in one inning of work.
Game Two Breakdown
The Tigers were first on the board once again to start out game two, starting with a Hayden Knox single to left, bringing around Baker. Ryan Probst added to the Wittenberg advantage with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Knox. Wittenberg held on to a 2-0 advantage through the top of the third inning, until the Scots posted three runs in the bottom half of the third. Maryville added another run in the fourth inning, holding a 4-2 advantage over the Tigers. Wittenberg brought the game back to even in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run Jack Hollinshead home run. Though the spark would not be enough to jolt the Wittenberg offense, as the Scots added the final go-ahead run the bottom half of the fifth inning.
Matt Shanor toed the rubber to start game two for the Red and White, tossing two and two-thirds innings. Shanor gave up three hits and struck out one. Adam Mays pitched three and two-thirds innings while striking out two. Aaron Fasano closed out the game with just over an inning of work, allowing no hits and striking out two.

Wittenberg will close out their nine-game road series to open the season with a trip to Franklin College on Sunday, Mar. 10. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
