Wittenberg Baseball Sweeps Allegheny On Senior Day

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg baseball team started off their Saturday afternoon doubleheader against the Gators of Allegheny by first celebrating the playing careers of three seniors from the Class of 2018.  It would be a final Saturday afternoon for Tim Bates, Andrew Goodpaster, and Paul Stanley, and another celebration for their hard work and dedication over the years. The Tigers took the first game by a 10-4 decision, collecting 12 hits to start the day. Wittenberg would continue their hot streak in game two with a 13-0 win, completing the sweep of the Gators. Bates would finish the afternoon 5 for 11 with four RBI's against the Gators.

 

GAME ONE

After Allegheny took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Wittenberg struck in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs. Ryan Probst started the Wittenberg scoring by reaching on the Allegheny error, bringing in Jack Hollinshead for the first run. Patrick Kenny delivered an RBI grounder to score Gage Carpenter, while Bates added the third run on an RBI single through the right side to score Probst. The offensive impact of Probst and Bates would help Wittenberg plate two more in the bottom of the fourth, extending the Tiger lead out to 5-3. Wittenberg kept the offense going into the fifth, starting with a Hollinshead RBI double to left, followed by a Carpenter RBI single to scoring Hollinshead. Probst would drive in Carpenter with the third consecutive Tiger hit to left field. Before, Kenny would drive in the final run forcing an Allegheny error to score Probst. Tanner Griggs got the start with three and two-thirds pitched, striking out four and nine hits allowed. Adam Mays came on to give four-plus innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season. Mays faced 19 batters, allowing four hits and striking out one.

GAME TWO

Wittenberg put together 16 hits in the second game, scoring in the final five consecutive innings. The Tiger offense would start by pushing their first run across in the fourth inning. The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the fifth, before exploding for a six-run sixth inning. The Wittenberg line-up had 10 different batters record a hit on the afternoon. Jace Barga would pick up his third win of the season with eight innings pitched, striking out three with six hits allowed. Andrew Goodpaster would come on to close, facing six batters with one hit allowed and striking out one.

 

UP NEXT: Wittenberg will return to action on Monday, April 30 when they travel to Ohio Northern for a 4:00 PM contest.
