Wittenberg Baseball Goes Off For 16-0 Shutout In Game Two At Kenyon

Gambier, Ohio – The Wittenberg University baseball team split their NCAC road series with the Lords of Kenyon College after dropping a hard-fought first game 9-4. The Tigers came out swinging in game two, taking a 16-0 decision. Wittenberg collected 16 hits on the afternoon, scoring the first run of the day taking an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first game. Coming back in the second game, Wittenberg would explode for two six-run innings including the top of the first of game two and repeating the offensive attack again in the fifth.  Ten of the 16 Tiger hits came in the second game, while Ryan Probst, Tim Bates, Hayden Knox and Jack Hollinshead each tallied two RBI's in the second game.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

After Wittenberg took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the first game, coming off the Knox RBI single scoring Matt Baker. Kenyon would tie the game back at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, adding four runs in bottom half of the sixth with three more crossing in the seventh and their final run crossing in the eighth. Wittenberg would begin their comeback in the top of the ninth, plating three runs as a bases-loaded walk issued to Justin Bargar pushed home Jeremy McAleese for the second Wittenberg run.  Knox recorded his second RBI of the first game, drawing the second RBI walk of the inning to bring in Andrew Shanor. Andrew Hammond brought home the final Tiger run of the first game, taking an inside pitch to bring home the final Wittenberg run. Tanner Griggs got the start, tossing five innings of three-hit ball with two strikeouts. Brandon Beegle and Andrew Goodpaster would each make an appearance and recording a strikeout. Michael Martin would throw the final inning.

Wittenberg jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after the first inning. After Bates drove in the first run by taking the Kenyon inside pitch. The Knox single up the middle drove in the next two Tiger runs. Chase Carpenter reached on the Kenyon error, driving home Bates for the fourth Wittenberg run. The Hollinshead double to left capped off the six-run first for the Tigers, as Carpenter and Knox came home to score. Hollinshead forced a Kenyon error in the third inning, as Carpenter would come across to score the seventh Tiger run. Wittenberg would return in the fifth inning to plate six more runs to extend their lead to 12-0. The Tigers would return to plate three more runs in the eighth inning. Jace Barga went the distance in game two with four hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

 

UP NEXT: Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, April 25 when they travel to Wilmington for a 4:00 PM contest.
