Wittenberg Baseball Splits Day With Hiram

Oberlin, Ohio – The offense stayed alive for the Wittenberg baseball team, as the Tiger's came off a 10 inning win against the Big Red of Denison. Wittenberg took on the Terriers of Hiram College from Oberlin, taking the first game of the NCAC doubleheader 3-1. The Tiger's would rattle off 15 hits in the second game before falling 7-6 on a walk-off Hiram single, as the home side found a late two-out rally.

 

GAME ONE

It was a pitcher dual through the first four innings of action as the game remained scoreless. Hiram was the first to strike in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring their one and only run of the first game. Wittenberg would come back in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1 on the Jack Siefert solo homer to left. A Tiger scoring rally started in the eighth inning when a Patrick Kenny single to left scored David Hamrick. Wittenberg plated their second run of the inning on a Tim Bates single through the left side to score Ryan Probst. Tanner Griggs took the hill to start the first game, throwing six innings facing 25 batters with five strikeouts and seven hits allowed. Brandon Beegle came on to close out the final three innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts against 12 batters faced.

 

GAME TWO

Wittenberg was the first to strike in the second game, plating the first run in the fourth inning off a Parker Thompson double down the left field line to score Jack Hollinshead. Siefert would homer for a second straight game this time in the fifth inning, sending a shot over the left field fence to give the Tiger's a 2-0 lead. After Hiram found their way on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Wittenberg would add to their lead in the top of the seventh on the Hollinshead single through the left side, scoring Bates. Hiram would knot the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Siefter would keep the hot bat with a single to left, scoring Probst to start a two-run eighth inning for the Tigers. Hayden Knox would follow with a single through the right side to bring home Kenny, extending the Wittenberg lead to 5-3. As Wittenberg would look for insurance in the top of the ninth inning, Probst would draw the bases loaded walk to give the Tigers the 6-3 advantage. A four-run ninth inning by the Terriers, including a walk-off single through the right side, would give them the game two decision, 7-6. Jace Barga took the mound to start the game, tossing six innings with eight hits allowed and two strikeouts.

 

UP NEXT: Wittenberg will return to action when they travel to Wabash for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 10 starting at 1:00 PM.
