Tigers Drop Home Opener To Otterbein 6-5

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg University baseball team hosted the Cardinals of Otterbein University in their opener at Carlton-Davidson Stadium. The Wittenberg offense exploded for 10 hits on the day, including Matt Baker going five for five with an RBI and a run scored.

 

OFFENSIVE NOTES

It was a battle from the beginning, as Otterbein plated their first run in the top of the first inning. The Tiger offense had more to match in the bottom half of the first, adding three of their own. As Baker collected his first hit of the day on a single to right. Gabe Stacy would push across the first Wittenberg run on his RBI single. Jordan Jolly doubled down the left field line to score Stacy and Jack Siefert later in the inning. Another sharply hit single down the right-field line by Baker would bring across Ryan Probst in the bottom of the second inning to extend the Wittenberg lead out to 4-1. The Tigers would go scoreless through four innings, plating one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Patrick Kenny would come across as the final run of the day for the Tigers, capitalizing on the Otterbein wild pitch.

 

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Rusty Hayhurst took the mound to start the game for the Tigers, chasing the elusive first strikeout. Facing 26 batters on the day, Hayhurst sat down five and allowing nine hits on the day. Adam Mays threw four innings of relief, striking out two with five hits allowed.
