Wittenberg Baseball Takes Down North Carolina Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, N.C. – The Wittenberg baseball team picked up their first win of the 2018 season 9-1 over the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan in their first game over spring break. The Tigers collected eight hits on the day, posting eight runs in the second inning. Leadoff hitter Matt Baker went 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in, batting in the leadoff spot for the Tigers. Tim Bates added three hits and three RBI's, and a run scored. Gage Carpenter was the third Tiger to collect multiple hits on the day, going 2 for 3 on the afternoon while drawing two walks.

 

OFFENSIVE NOTES

Baker knocked in the first two Wittenberg runs, bringing in David Hamrick and Jack Hollinshead in the top of the second inning. A RBI groundout by Patrick Kenny advanced the Wittenberg runners a base, bringing home Carpenter to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. A double to left field brought in Baker and Gabe Stacy to extend the Wittenberg lead out to 5-0. Jack Siefert brought around Bates for the Tiger's sixth run on an RBI single to center field. Hollinshead doubled to left center, bringing home Hayden Knox and Siefert, giving Witt the early 8-0 lead. Bates brought home the final Wittenberg run in the top of the third inning, scoring Baker on the RBI single.

 

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Tanner Griggs picked up his first collegiate win, tossing five innings of three-hit ball and striking out five. Adam Mays faced seven North Carolina Wesleyan batters, allowing one hit without giving up a run. Andrew Goodpaster and Andrew Juelg faced the final nine N.C. Wesleyan hitters, as the Battling Bishops brought in one run over the final two innings of action.
