Tigers Pick Up Midweek Victory Over Capital

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg baseball team grabbed a 3-1 victory thanks to some solid pitching and timely hitting in a midweek all-Lutheran matchup at Carleton Davidson Stadium on Wednesday.

The Tigers improved to 9-17 overall with the win while sending Capital to a 12-18 record and evening the season series at 1-1.. Wittenberg heads into a four-game series with conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26. Both days feature doubleheaders that begin at Noon at home.

Wittenberg's pitching victory went to junior Jordan Hitt (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) who pitched three innings in relief, allowing four hits and one unearned run next to three strikeouts and just one walk. He came on for junior starter Luke Black (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham), who pitched four scoreless innings with three hits, three walks and one strikeout. Senior Frank Sullivan (Milford, Ohio/Milford) picked up the save with two innings to close the game out, throwing two strikeouts and one walk while surrendering no hits.

The solid pitching was balanced by offense at the right moments. The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning and added one in the fourth, with Capital unable to score aside from one run in the seventh.

The lineup benefited from nine total hits, including eight from a combined four players. Senior Zac Wilson (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, sophomore Dalton Boucher (Granville, Ohio/Granville) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored on a third inning solo home run to right, junior Will Cousins (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and junior Corey Farnbauch (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) had an RBI on a 2-for-3 night.

Sophomore Josh Kaplan (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) chipped in a hit and a sacrifice hit and scored a run on a wild pitch in the third prior to Boucher's homer. In the fourth, Farnbauch singled in Cousins to account for the final Tiger run.
