Tigers Run Streak To Five Over Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Five errors helped the Wittenberg baseball team extend its winning streak to five games with a 6-1 win over Mount St. Joseph at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium. The Tigers improved to 12-7 on the season, while the Lions fell to 10-8.

Wittenberg converted three errors in the fourth into two runs and two errors in the sixth into three runs, then capped the game with one in the seventh, while Mount tallied their lone run in the fourth.

The Tigers hit safely 10 times in the game, making it the ninth game of the season with a double digit hit total. Four of the hits were for two bases, and the offensive totals also included four stolen bases and three sacrifice hits.

Freshman David Moore (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) brought in the game's first runs when he sent a grounder to short to plate sophomore Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) and senior Mike Yednock (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) in the fourth. Moore wound up safe at first on a fielding error, while Goodwin himself had reached on a fielding error by the pitcher on his sacrifice bunt attempt.

Moore led off the sixth by again reaching on an error, and would cross the plate on an RBI single by senior Ray Noe (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) following a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nick Van Dyne (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson). Junior Matt Hampp (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) drove an RBI double to left center field to score Noe, and senior Jason Haunty (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) brought Hampp around on an RBI single.

Moore got another chance in the seventh with Goodwin on third base and one out. The freshman laced a double down the right field line for the RBI to complete the Tigers' scoring line.

Moore finished the game with a team-best two RBIs on 1-for-5 hitting, joined in the RBI column by Noe (1-3, one run, two walks), Hampp (2-5, one run) and Haunty (1-5). Goodwin put together the finest day at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing with two runs scored and two doubles.

Hampp and Moore also doubled in the game, while Van Dyne notched two sacrifice bunts and Moore stole two bases. Noe and Hampp each added one stolen base.

Sophomore Kevin Tolle (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) started the game on the mound and tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five with three walks. Senior Jim Clement (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) picked up the win to move to 2-0 on two hits, one run and one strikeout in three innings. Senior Zach Spring (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) picked up the save by allowing just one hit among 10 batters faced in three innings.

The Tigers return to Springfield and Carleton Davidson Stadium for a midweek, non-conference, nine-inning game with the Wilmington Quakers at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.
