Wittenberg Athletics Events Scheduled For Homecoming Weekend 2014

For Homecoming 2014, Wittenberg University's Department of Athletics is rolling out the red carpet for its alumni and fans. A variety of events are scheduled throughout the weekend that will hopefully appeal to Tigers of every age!

Alumni Golf Outing

Kick off Homecoming Weekend 2014 by participating in the annual Alumni Golf Outing, hosted by Tiger men's basketball Head Coach Bill Brown.

The event is scheduled for a shotgun start using a Texas scramble format at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield. The cost is $42, which includes greens fees, cart, range balls, and a box lunch/beverage.

Athletics Hall of Honor

Homecoming weekend kicks off with the annual Athletics Hall of Honor induction ceremony at Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Springfield. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.

Kathy Aros Jenkins ’97 (soccer), Dwight Carter ’94 (football, track), Mike Dowds ’82 (football), Chuck Imhoff ’63 (tennis), Amy Kraus ’99 (field hockey) and Dave Moore ’64 (tennis) will be formally inducted into the Athletics Hall of Honor during a banquet on Friday, Oct. 24. All Tiger fans are welcomed to attend the event, which includes a formal dinner and a ceremony recognizing each of the inductees.

Tiger Club Breakfast

All Tiger Club members, including donors and former student-athletes, are welcomed to attend the Tiger Club Breakfast from 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in a tent near Hollenbeck Hall. A buffet-style breakfast is available at a cost of $10 per person.

Celebration Of The Life Of Ron Murphy

A Celebration of Life will take place at the main tent near Hollenbeck Hall in honor of former Tiger football, track and tennis head coach Ron Murphy, who passed away in July 2014, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

A 1960 graduate of Wittenberg, Murphy was a four-year letterwinner in football for the Tigers, scoring 34 touchdowns in his collegiate career. He returned to his alma mater to serve as a coach and professor for nearly 30 years, and he had a tremendous impact upon thousands of students while leading the football, men’s tennis and men’s track & field teams.

Light refreshments and beverages will be served. Mary Jo Murphy, Lysa Murphy and many of his grandchildren will be in attendance. For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (937) 327-7432.

1978 & 1979 Football Team Reunions

A special reunion celebrating the NCAA Division III Tournament runner-up Wittenberg football teams in 1978 and 1979 will take place during Homecoming 2014. A tailgate tent will be set up on the lawn in front of the HPER Center from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Members of the teams, their families and friends are welcomed to attend the reunion event at a cost of $10.

The tailgate tent will have lunch menu items and a cash bar available.

Home Games

Wittenberg University Football will take on North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Kenyon at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at historic Edwards-Maurer Field. At halftime of the game, there will be special recognition of the Athletics Hall of Honor inductees, the 1978 & 1979 football team members, and team captains from all sports who are in attendance.

Wittenberg University Volleyball is hosting a tri-match that includes NCAC rival Allegheny and Marietta. The Tigers will take on Allegheny in its Homecoming match at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in Pam Evans Smith Arena. That will be followed by a match between Allegheny and Marietta, and then the Tigers will square off with Marietta at 5 p.m. Prior to the match, Wittenberg's two seniors will be honored by the home fans.

Tiger Tri

The fourth annual Tiger Tri will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. The triathlon, presented by local alumni and volunteers and presented with financial support from Payton Plumbing and Kapp Construction, is open to the public.

The Tiger Tri begins with a 1/4 mile swim in Wittenberg's HPER Center Natatorium, continues with a 15-mile bike path ride and ends with a 3.6 mile campus run. Participants can complete the race solo for a $40 entry fee (students and military get a $25 discounted rate), or they can enter the race as part of a relay team for $68.

All proceeds from the Tiger Tri go to scholarships for area students to attend Wittenberg.
