Wittenberg University Vice President and Director of Athletics, Dr. Gary Williams, has appointed Dr. Calvin Hunter to the position of Associate Athletic Director for External Operations, effective February 1, 2019. 

 Hunter arrives at Wittenberg after an accomplished career that has spanned from event management duties at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina in the mid 90’s, to serving as the chair of the Hospitality, Tourism and Sport Management department at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, from 2011-17. Most recently, Hunter spent the fall semester as an Associate Professor in the department of Sport Studies at his alma mater, Guilford College, in Greensboro. 

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my career at Wittenberg University. I am excited about developing relationships and building upon the strong tradition in academics and athletics.” expressed Hunter, “I would like to thank Dr. Frandsen and Dr. Williams for believing in my fit with this great institution.”

Prior to his time at Flagler College, Hunter served as an Assistant Professor of Sport Management and Assistant football coach at NCAA Div. II Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, from 2002 to 2011. Hunter has also served as an assistant football coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (1995-97) and Guilford College (1997-99). 

“We are truly excited to welcome Calvin and his family to our athletic department and University.  Calvin brings to us knowledge and skills in facility management, sport administration, teaching, and community relations that made him the ideal fit for our position.” said Williams, “Calvin’s breath of experiences from his work with the Greensboro Coliseum, to his years coaching on the sidelines, to his teaching and mentoring roles as a faculty member, brings us a leader with great perspective in not just athletics, but in also helping us continue to cultivate relationships across campus and beyond.” 

Hunter, who was inducted into the Guilford College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006, earned a Master of Science in Sport Management at Georgia Southern in 1994, before earning his Doctorate of Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy in 2005. Hunter also obtained an MBA from St. Leo University in 2008.
