Wittenberg University Men’s Basketball Tradition of Success

The Wittenberg University men’s basketball program is the all-time winningest NCAA Division III program in the country measured by both total number of victories and winning percentage.  The Tigers have participated in more NCAA tournaments and Final Fours than any other DIII program in the nation.  Taking all NCAA divisions into account, the Tigers have the third best winning percentage, which places then in front of such esteemed programs as Duke, Kansas and UCLA.

Philosophy of the Wittenberg Basketball Skills Camps

“The design of our camp is focused on the teaching of the basic fundamental skills needed to learn, play and improve one’s game.  We believe campers should be active with any sitting kept at a minimum.  We have superb facilities and when combined with the experienced and skilled instructional staff we assemble each summer enables us to provide an outstanding camp experience.”

Camp Director

Matt Croci is the Associate Head Coach for Wittenberg and brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 7 as a head coach. Croci has over 20 years of summer camp experience and holds the distinction as the only person in the history of the North  The camp staff will include some of Ohio’s best high school and college coaches in addition to current Wittenberg players and  Coast Athletic Conference to be named both Player of the Year (1994) and Coach of the Year (2008) coaches. Wittenberg’s program is the all-time winningest NCAA Division III program in the country.

Outstanding Facility and Dining Opportunities

All camp activities are conducted INDOORS at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Center located on campus.  The HPER Center includes five full courts and 22 baskets. Three of the playing courts and 14 baskets are located in the AIR-CONDITIONED Pam Evans Smith Arena.  Campers also have access to the Olympic-size swimming pool in the HPER Center natatorium.

Resident campers stay in AIR-CONDITIONED Firestine Residence Hall that is located only 75 yards from the HPER Center.  Camp coaching staff members reside in the residence hall along with campers and provide supervision during meal breaks and in the evening.  Roommate assignments are made according to registration form requests.  Others will be paired with campers of comparable age range.

Campers eat meals in the Center Dining Room (CDR) which is located in the university’s Student Center. The CDR, which is air-conditioned for the camper’s comfort, serves meals on an all-you-can-eat and drink basis.  The CDR is located approximately 150 yards only from Firestine Residence Hall.

Readily Accessible Location

Wittenberg University, located near Interstate 70 in Springfield, Ohio, is readily accessible from anywhere in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Springfield is 35 miles west of Columbus and 20 miles northeast of Dayton. Interstate 75 is just 15 miles east of Springfield.

 


Highlights and Features of Comrehensive Skills Camps - July 10-13 and July 24-27

  • All campers, resident and commuter, check in Sunday between 12:30-2:00 p.m.
  • Check out is on Wednesday between 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Ratio of 1 instructor for every ten campers.
  • Daily teaching stations on fundamental basketball skills.
  • Daily shooting instruction, drills, and contests.
  • Daily 3/3 and 5/5 competitive team play.
  • Maximum of seven players per 5/5 camp team.
  • 3/3 and 5/5 tournaments on last day.
  • Access to Olympic-size swimming pool.
  • Air-conditioned gym, dining hall and residence hall.
  • Minimal walking distance between gym, residence hall and dining hall.

Cost of Comprehensive Skills Camp

Resident camper - $335 and includes all basketball sessions, all meals, three nights lodging and camp tee.

Extended day camper (commuter) - $240 and includes all basketball sessions, lunches and dinners and camp tee.

Day camper (commuter) - $210 and includes all basketball sessions except Monday and Tuesday evenings, Sunday dinner and lunches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please note that camp begins on Sunday for ALL campers.

2016 Shooting, Guard and Big Man Position Camp – June 22-24

The entire focus on this camp will be on building offensive skills, with shooting the basketball being the primary emphasis.  Comprehensive shooting instruction will focus on hand mechanics and footwork.  Tips for developing a quicker shooting release and improving shooting range will be emphasized. 

Topics to be covered with Big Men position work will include pre- and post-catch footwork, catching the ball, post moves for scoring on the block, face-up offense, reading and beating double teams, ball screen offense and offensive rebounding.

Guard play instruction will include handling full court defensive pressure, pushing the ball in the fast break, using the dribble to create offense, moving without the ball including the setting and receiving of screens and ball screen offense.

Highlights and Features of Shooting and Position Camp – June 22-24

  • All campers, resident and commuter, check in between 1:00-2:00 p.m.
  • Check out on the final day is at 12:00 noon.
  • Ratio of 1 instructor for every 6 campers.
  • Entire emphasis of camp is on building offensive skills with shooting being the primary focus.
  • Two guards will join one big man for 3/3 half-court play.
  • Gym, residence hall and dining hall are air-conditioned.
  • Access to Olympic-size swimming pool.
  • Minimal walking distance between gym, residence hall and dining hall.
