SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Gary F. Tranquill, football coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, and Eldon J. Miller, basketball coach at the University of Northern Iowa, head a list of 12 outstanding athletes and coaches who will be inducted June 6 into Wittenberg Univeristy's Athletics Hall of Honor. All inductees are alumni.

Football standouts, in addition to Tranquill, are the late John L. Brickels, athletic director at Miami (Oxford) University, basketball coach at West Virginia University, and assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns; Carl F. "Ducky" Schroeder, legendary football and baseball coach at Massillon High School; and Perry VanHyning, who is remembered in Ohio annals for starring in a Wittenberg win over Ohio State in Columbus. Schroeder and VanHyning are retired.

Joining Miller as basketball honorees are Al Thrasher, the only three-time All-America at Wittenberg; Dr. William I. Goettman, perhaps the best scholar-athlete in Wittenberg history and now a leading Springfield surgeon; Terry E. Deems, the Tigers' leading career average scorer and top school and Ohio Athletic Conference rebounder; and H. Perk Robins, who combined basketball and baseball well enough to twice make all-OAC squads in both sports and to sign a bonus contract with the Cincinnati Reds. Deems is manager of compensation, benefits and personnel policy at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron. Robins is vice president for university relations at the University of Georgia.

Also inducted will be swimmer Carl J. Berg, tennis coach Margaret O. Armstrong, and golfer James B. Logue.

Berg is the most prolific swimmer ever produced at Wittenberg. He was a two-time All-America and three-time All-OAC champion in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. He held school freestyle records from 50 through 1,000 yards. Berg was recently named superintendent of the Walnut Township Local School District in Millersport, Ohio, after 15 years as an administrator in Springfield City Schools.

Armstrong excelled in tennis, volleyball, basketball and softball. She was women's tennis coach for 16 years, producing All-America players and NCAA competitors. For 39 years, she taught physical education before retiring in 1983.

Logue was golf team captain all four years at Wittenberg and set six course low score records. He won one OAC title and was three times runner-up. Twice he was runner-up to Jack Nicklaus in the Ohio Intercollegiate Championships. After Wittenberg, he was three times a member of the PGA Cup Team that played against Great Britain. Logue is a golf professional at Brookside Country Club in Canton, and has been honored as a leader in his profession by Sports Illustrated.
